MTV’s The Wrap Up keeps up to date with the hottest music coming out of the UK, but every week, we’re taking you across the Atlantic and presenting the hottest emerging artists in North America with our new segment Underground Heat. These up-and-coming stars are going to blow up any minute now, and we’re here to tell you about them first…
We’re super excited to kick off this weekly segment with Beau Young Prince, one of the fastest rising artists to come out of the states in 2015,. The DMV-based rapper, that’s DC-Maryland-Virginia, has been in the game for a few years and most often compared to fellow DMV-artist Goldlink, but he’s really kicked up a notch in 2015, releasing multiple bangers and even debuting a new collaborative project with New York-based producer DJ YMNO as one half of Young Futura. The duo, who have been seriously heating up the airwaves with their debut single “Gypsy Woman,” combine dance flavor with hip hop swagger, crafting together the perfect sound for those looking to infuse the best of two genres under one roof.
More than just his duo project though, BYP has been making some seriously big strides, working with a diverse range of producers like Astro Zu and Auram, and most recently with the enormously talented UK-artist Troyboi for the massive track, “What We Do.” Released under Diplo’s legendary label Mad Decent, the track puts both artists into new territory; Troyboi manages to scale back and truly let the Groovy God shine, ultimately proving that both guys are some of the most exciting to blend multiple genres under one roof.
Since it’s close to the end of the world, we asked him to reflect on how 2015 went for him–
“It’s been a crazy year. As an upcoming artist you experience a lot of ups and downs. I just work hard and perseve through the madness. I had a lot of wonderful life changing situations occur and it has influenced my music to the highest degree.
One of the highlights of my year is releasing a single via Mad Decent with producer Troyboi and starting my new collaborative project Young Futura. The first YF single has over 200k plays on SoundCloud in 2 months and the visual is over 160k in a month. I am beyond proud and blessed. As for my Mad Decent release, “What We Do” broke 200k plays in just 8 days! I’m glad people are starting to feel the groove and recognize that I am a pioneer in hip hop bridging the gap between dance and rap. I blend genres.
It was also a pleasure to Travel more this year. Thanks to my brothers at Stryve Productions I opened up for Post Malone, Playboi Carti, and did shows all over the states. Now this week I am opening up for my sister Angel Haze, who I am fortunate to have met because she has shown nothing but love and given me a great opportunity.
I have broken 100k on 5 records this year and have covered AfroPunk, VICE, Annie Mac, Hypetrak, DJBooth, Earmilk, Mad Decent, and am looking forward to getting my sound out more with my next solo project #UntilThen prod. Completely by Yalamusiq.”
Beau Young Prince has managed to craft a stoner-happy persona with the talents to match. His love of the mary jane is perfect with his laid back tone prove that he may be one of the happiest guys in hip hop, but even more than that, his releases prove that he’s definitely got the chops to have an even greater 2016.
